Carol Dweck's talk on Growth Mindset, and the concept of "not yet" was introduced to me last semester in Indian Epics. I was grateful to have learned about this at the beginning of the semester because I went into my semester with a positive outlook on learning, and truly learning - engaging in my courses. The end result was feeling accomplished no matter the grade because I knew I was getting better in difficult courses like Physics. I think the concept of "not yet" has taken so much pressure and stress off my shoulders. I realized I do not need to rush into trying to learn everything. I can learn on my own pace, and the results of that are better grades and achievements. For this semester, I plan to keep this concept in mind for my Organic Chemistry Lab. I am a little worried about this course in particular, but I have to remember it is about learning not worrying. From last semester, I feel I am a little higher on the growth mindset spectrum because I stress less, do more, and engage more in academia, fitness, and overall just having a positive outlook. I'm looking forward to see what Dweck's concept has in store for me this semester as I will be preparing for graduation.
Hi Dhara!
ReplyDeleteI love this. I actually used that picture in one of my growth mindset posts. It is so true. I love the words "not yet'. This helps set up a mindset for success. I honestly will try this the next time I fail, and maybe it will help me to cop. Also, I am in Organic Chemistry lab, so I feel you. Honestly, it is the class I am most worried about at this point. I really like your saying, "it's about learning not worrying."
Hello again Dhara! I really enjoyed your passage about what you have taken away from Growth Mindset. I am currently taking Indian Epics and its no wonder why enrolled in another course with Dr. Gibbs. Moreover, I have taken both of those courses and the concept of Growth Mindset can really come in handy! Especially if your going into the medical field, I think the most important thing to have a Growth Mindset attitude and bask in the process. That will help you lay down a strong foundation in any of the science courses. But anyway! It seems like you already have a grasp on this approach so you should do well. I wish you luck !
ReplyDeleteHey again Dhara. I enjoy reading different peoples aspects of what they take away from different Growth Mindsets. It really gives one countless ways to look at it. I loved your passage about what you thought about it as well. I had not seen the image you chose to incorporate and I have to say it is one of my favorites. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and giving others like me to learn about more perspectives.
